Medieval tombstones : and graveyards of Bosnia and Hum

Tvrdi uvez | Engleski | 2010. | Antikvarnica

“Dubravko Lovrenović’s book Steed: Medieval Bosnian and Hum Tombstones is of monographic character, while having an interdisciplinary structure. Lovrenović’s monograph about steed is both a novelty and a great addition to our culture, not only in the synthetical presentation of the chosen topic but also in the context of the newest, unfortunately, too ideological colored approaches to the history of Bosnia and Herzegovina. Therefore, I recommend publishing the book as soon as possible and enabling not only citizens of Bosnian and Herzegovina, Croatia and Serbia to have access to it, but also all interested readers throughout Europe and the world, where its English version will make a crucial contribution.” (Prof. dr. Stjepan Kušar)

“The position of refuting Bogomil theory in Lovrenović’s book is its most expressed critical stand on tradition. Actually, the author’s central conception and intention in this book were to propose argumentative theses on the religious affiliation of the deceased under the steed, and according to their affiliation determine the stećcis’ as well, with the theory that under the steed are buried Christians from various Christian communities, from Catholics, to Hum and Bosnian Christians to Orthodox. As an excellent historian, Lovrenović uses above all epitaphs from the stećci written by Bosnians, which sometimes with their own structural elements indicate of their exact affiliation. However, because of the lack of such materials, he also investigates other evidence and of course presents the opinions of previous researchers and their inferences.” (Prof. dr. Miroslav Palameta)

“Written in a clear and popular style, while above all having an essential scientific structure with exceptionally useful indexes of personal names and geographical terms, this text will be accessible to a public with different levels of knowledge about the topic, and will be remembered for its interesting and useful facts and their connection to the meaningful whole that opens new paths. The descriptions are precise, the data critically selected. It is innovative in its approach, impeccable and complete in its content, reduced to the essential and accessible, while with its elements of extensive research, Professor Dubravko Lovrenović’s text fulfills the demands of modern scientific literature in all areas.” (Prof. dr. Ljiljana Ševo)

“The subject is an extensive topic in Bosnian and Herzegovinian cultural history, and seems to have been waiting for Lovrenović, a historian who has no fear of historiographic deconstruction and destroying historiographic myths but rather experiences them as a first-rate challenge in the art of history. In this regard, I believe that we can fearlessly proclaim his book Stećci: Medieval Bosnian and Hum Tombstones, published by the Sarajevo publishing house Rabic, as Lovrenoyić’s new historiographic success, with which the author thoroughly confirms his already cult status among Bosnian-Hum medievalists.” (Prof. dr. Ivana Prijatelj-Pavičić)
